Shortcuts should save you time and effort by providing direct links to frequently used programs and files, letting you skip having to click through several menus and folders, but that's not always the case nowadays. As you install new programs, each of which can add multiple or duplicate shortcuts on your system, it's easy to lose control over an overgrown Start Menu, overcrowded desktop, and an overloaded IE Favorites folder. Before you know it, your pristine PC looks more like a garden full of weeds. Removing unnecessary programs, then, becomes like weeding your garden—and boy, it's hard to get every single weed. Even when you uninstall a program, that doesn't always clean up its outdated shortcuts. So you may end a mess!
